Volunteer Opportunities
MooseWood Nature Center is in need of Greeters and individuals or groups that may be willing to present a class, workshop, or public programs. Looking for a venue to teach and share knowledge? - Animal Feeder/Habitat Maintenance– Feed, care and perform daily, weekly, or monthly maintenance for the live animals that call MooseWood home. Training is provided.
- Nature Center Greeter– Host the nature center during regular business hours, Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 12-4 pm. Greeter will feed animals and perform animal habitat maintenance as needed. Training is provided.
- Nature Center (exhibits)– Help us brainstorm, develop, monitor and maintain nature center displays, exhibits, and activities inside the nature center.
- Birthday Party Host- Do you enjoy interacting with children? Have a basic knowledge of reptiles and amphibians? This volunteer position might be for you. Volunteer(s) needed to present a 45 minute to 1 hour presentation on a themed birthday party. Presentation could be made up of a 15 minute animal talk, craft activity or game. Parent and birthday child can choose a theme listed on birthday party page or can make their own theme.
- Public Educational Programs/Scout programs- Have spare time? Are you looking to make a difference in the community? MooseWood Nature Center is looking for volunteers to assist and/or present educational programs to the public and to scout groups. For more information, contact us at moosewoodnc@gmail.com.
- School Programs- MooseWood Nature Center is looking for retired educators or volunteers with an interest in sharing their appreciation of the natural world with children. Volunteers would be working with large groups of youth typically ranging in age from 6-12 years. Interested volunteer(s) should have knowledge of reptiles and amphibians and familiar with the ecology of a wetland bog as a majority of our programming consists of these subjects. - Public Presentation/Class- Do you have a hobby, trade or skill you want to share with others? Or want to share photos of an event you experienced? MooseWood can help you share your experience with others by providing a venue for your presentation or class.
- Weed/Invasive Removal- Help with weeding and gardening maintenance as needed in native wildflower garden (our certified Monarch Waystation) located in front of the nature center along with pulling assorted invasive species in the enclosed Pool to Pond area.
- Fundraising/Grants– Help raise money and raise awareness of the nature center through grant writing and searching out and creating fundraising opportunities. Volunteer(s) should have some grant writing and fundraising experience, community contacts, people skills, interest in helping the nature center succeed and a willingness to have fun.
- Newsletter– Write nature, outdoor interest, or educational articles for the MooseWood News newsletter.
- Publicity/Outreach- Help MooseWood Nature Center spread the word about upcoming programs and events by creating and/or posting posters or fliers throughout the community and on the Northern Michigan University campus.
