Moose on the Move

Although moose were native to the U.P., by the turn of the 20th century they had been eliminated by logging, hunting, and disease. In the 1980s the Department of Natural Resources developed a bold plan to bring moose from Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario to a suitable habitat in northwestern Marquette County. The moose were tranquilized by sharpshooters, lifted by helicopter off of frozen lakes, and trucked to the U.P., where hundreds of people, including Michigan’s governor, watched them be released.
